Difference between S460N and S460M steel plate

Jan 07, 2026 Leave a message

S460N (EN 10025-3): Normalized or normalized rolled, with 460 MPa yield strength and -20°C toughness, ideal for bridges and cranes in moderate climates.
S460M (EN 10025-4): Thermomechanically rolled (TMCP), with 460 MPa yield strength and -50°C toughness, suited for cold climates and complex forming.
S460N is processed for consistent microstructure, while S460M's TMCP enhances formability and toughness, making it closer to en 10025 3 s460nl normalized structural steel plate in cold performance.

Processing and Fabrication

S460N: Normalized for consistent microstructure; suited for standard welding and machining. Preheating (100-150°C) for >20 mm; PWHT optional (550-650°C).

S460M: TMCP enhances formability for complex shapes; lower CEV (≤0.45%) improves weldability. Similar preheating and PWHT.

Consumables: Both use ER70S-6 (GMAW), EM12K flux with EH14 wire (SAW).

Applications

S460N: Bridges, cranes, building frameworks in moderate climates (e.g., temperate Europe).

S460M: Offshore platforms, wind towers, and structures in cold climates (e.g., northern Europe) due to superior toughness and formability.

For extreme cold, S460M aligns with en 10025 3 s460nl normalized structural steel plate.
