What is abrasion-resistant steel?

 

Abrasion-resistant steel, also called wear-resistant steel, has increased hardness and toughness compared to conventional high-strength steel, lasting up to 4 times longer - where hardness is the ability to with stand rubbing or scraping and toughness is resilience against fracturing.

 

AR400 versus AR450 versus AR500+

Different mills may have different "recipes" for AR steel, but produced material is administered a hardness test – known as the Brinell Test – to determine the category in which it falls. Brinell tests performed on AR steel materials typically meet ASTM E10 specifications for testing material hardness.

 

The technical difference between AR400, AR450 and AR500 is the Brinell Hardness Number (BHN), which indicates the material's level of hardness. Materials with higher BHNs have greater levels of hardness, while materials with lower BHNs have lower levels of hardness:

  • AR400: 360-440 BHN Typically
  • AR450: 430-480 BHN Typically
  • AR500: 460-544 BHN Typically

Abrasion Resistant (AR) Steel Plate is a high carbon alloy steel specifically designed to have higher hardness properties than mild steel.

 

Abrasion Resistant Steel Plate is a steel plate with a high carbon content, alloyed with a range of different elements such as carbon and boron. Wear-resistant steel plates are typically produced using a hardening process, which increases the hardness of the steel and creates a unique grain structure.

 

Wear is the process by which the surface of a material is abraded by friction. Scratches, abrasions or slow wear occur when a surface comes into contact with different components or materials. This is a common problem in heavy industry, but can also be a problem for machines with long duty cycles or harsh operating conditions. Material lubrication can improve performance, but it is best to use wear-resistant materials.

1. Construction equipment. Construction equipment, including structural beams, bulldozers, compactors, etc., can benefit from the use of AR steels, as most of this equipment is exposed to highly abrasive media.

Abrasion resistant steel plate is mainly divided into three categories: general-purpose, impact-resistant and high-temperature-resistant; the total thickness of wear-resistant steel plate can be as small as 5.5 (2.5+3) mm, and the thickest can be as thick as 30 (15+15) mm; the wear-resistant steel plate can be rolled to produce wear-resistant pipes with the smallest diameter of DN200, and it can be processed to form wear-resistant elbows, wear-resistant tees, and wear-resistant reducers.

Abrasion-resistant steel is typically used in applications where there is a lot of wear and tear, such as in mining equipment, construction equipment, dump bodies, and excavator buckets. AR steel is made by adding certain alloys to the steel during the manufacturing process, which makes it more resistant to abrasion and helps it to last longer in harsh environments. Case : Steel Plates Supply for 100,000m³ Full Containment Ammonia Storage Tank Project

 

GNEE STEEL is currently participating in the procurement phase of a 100,000m³ full containment ammonia storage tank project, supplying high-quality steel plates for critical tank components. Due to the corrosive nature of ammonia and the risk of Ammonia Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC), the project requires strict metallurgical control of materials according to EN 10028-3 standards.

 

One of the most important technical requirements of this project is the strict limitation of the actual Yield Strength (Re) for all NL2 grade materials. To prevent SCC risks in ammonia storage environments, the actual yield strength must not exceed 390 MPa, regardless of the nominal values specified in the standard or plate thickness ranges. This requirement places higher demands on steelmaking process control, heat treatment stability, and material testing.
