LR E and LR A are standardized shipbuilding steel plates certified by Lloyd's Register (LR), designed for different levels of structural application based on toughness requirements and service environments. Both grades commonly share a minimum yield strength of 235 MPa. Their fundamental distinction lies in the minimum Charpy V-notch impact test temperature and the resultant scope of use.
Key Differences
The primary difference is the impact test requirement and structural criticality. LR Grade A steel has no specified impact test requirement and is intended for use in non-critical, secondary structures such as internal bulkheads or platforms in ambient temperature service where the risk of brittle fracture is minimal. In contrast, LR Grade E steel is required to meet stringent impact toughness criteria at the significantly lower temperature of -40°C (-40°F). This ensures exceptional resistance to brittle fracture, qualifying Grade E for the most demanding applications, including ice-going vessels, Arctic offshore structures, and critical hull members in polar operations. Achieving this performance typically involves stringent fine-grain practice and normalized rolling. Therefore, the selection is dictated by operational severity: Grade A is suitable for low-risk, secondary components; Grade E is essential for primary structures operating in severe Arctic or sub-zero environments where maximum low-temperature toughness is mandatory for safety.
