Steel Wear Plate NM400 NM600
Steel wear plates NM400 and NM600 are widely used abrasion-resistant materials designed to extend equipment life and reduce maintenance costs. The key difference lies in hardness:
- NM400: Standard wear-resistant grade with balanced toughness
NM400 wear plate is widely used in various industrial fields as a kind of high-strength and high wear-resistant steel plate material. Its excellent wear resistance, strength and corrosion resistance meet the needs of different industries. At the same time, its easy processing characteristics also provide convenience for its application in various fields. With the continuous progress of science and technology and the expansion of application fields, NM400 wear-resistant plate will play a more important role in the future.
- NM600: Ultra-high hardness grade for extreme abrasion
The production process of NM600 steel body armor plates mainly includes smelting, continuous casting, rolling and heat treatment. In the smelting process, the use of vacuum induction furnace for melting, to ensure the purity of steel. Continuous casting process, the use of continuous casting machine will cast steel into slabs. In the rolling process, the rolling mill is used to roll the slab into the required thickness and width. Finally, through the heat treatment process, the internal organisation of the steel plate is adjusted to improve its mechanical properties and wear resistance.
At GNEE Steel, we supply both NM400 and NM600 plates with strict quality control, ensuring stable performance across industries such as mining, construction, and cement.

FAQ
What is the difference between NM400 and NM600 wear plate?
NM400 and NM600 mainly differ in hardness and wear resistance. NM400 offers balanced performance with good toughness and easier processing, while NM600 provides ultra-high hardness and superior abrasion resistance for extreme wear conditions.
What is NM400 wear steel plate used for?
NM400 is widely used in general wear applications such as excavator buckets, dump truck bodies, conveyors, and construction machinery where both wear resistance and impact resistance are required.
What is NM600 steel plate used for?
NM600 is used in extreme abrasion environments like mining crushers, cement plant liners, and heavy-duty chutes where maximum wear resistance and longer service life are critical.
Is NM600 better than NM400?
NM600 is better in terms of wear resistance and lifespan in high-abrasion conditions. However, NM400 is more suitable for applications involving impact and easier fabrication, making it more versatile.
What is the hardness of NM400 and NM600 steel plate?
NM400 typically has a hardness of 370–430 HBW, while NM600 ranges from 570–630 HBW. The higher hardness of NM600 makes it significantly more resistant to wear.
Is NM600 wear plate difficult to weld?
Yes, NM600 is more difficult to weld due to its high hardness. It requires preheating, low-hydrogen electrodes, and controlled cooling to prevent cracking.
Can NM400 and NM600 be cut and processed easily?
NM400 is relatively easy to cut, weld, and bend using standard methods. NM600 requires advanced cutting techniques such as laser or plasma cutting and careful handling during fabrication.
How long does NM600 last compared to NM400?
In high-abrasion environments, NM600 can last significantly longer than NM400, often extending service life by 50% or more depending on working conditions.
How to choose between NM400 and NM600 wear plate?
If your application involves moderate wear and impact, NM400 is the better choice. For extreme abrasion with minimal impact, NM600 is more suitable due to its higher hardness.
Is NM600 wear plate more expensive than NM400?
Yes, NM600 is generally more expensive due to its higher hardness and complex production process. However, it often provides better long-term value by reducing maintenance and replacement costs.

Case : Steel Plates Supply for 100,000m³ Full Containment Ammonia Storage Tank Project
GNEE STEEL is currently participating in the procurement phase of a 100,000m³ full containment ammonia storage tank project, supplying high-quality steel plates for critical tank components. Due to the corrosive nature of ammonia and the risk of Ammonia Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC), the project requires strict metallurgical control of materials according to EN 10028-3 standards.
One of the most important technical requirements of this project is the strict limitation of the actual Yield Strength (Re) for all NL2 grade materials. To prevent SCC risks in ammonia storage environments, the actual yield strength must not exceed 390 MPa, regardless of the nominal values specified in the standard or plate thickness ranges. This requirement places higher demands on steelmaking process control, heat treatment stability, and material testing.

Raw high-strength steel plates ready for the 100,000 m³ full containment ammonia storage tank production
Project Materials and Technical Requirements
The project mainly uses P355NL2 and P275NL2 normalized pressure vessel steel plates, which are widely applied in low-temperature storage tanks due to their excellent toughness and weldability.
Key technical specifications include:
- Material grades: P355NL2 and P275NL2 (Normalized)
- Yield strength: Standard minimum / Maximum limited to 390 MPa
- Hardness: ≤ 225 HBW in base material
- Impact testing: Charpy-V notch test at -50°C, minimum 27J
- Certification: EN 10204 3.1 certificate, with optional 3.2 certification
These strict requirements ensure that the steel plates maintain stable mechanical properties and high resistance to ammonia-induced stress corrosion during long-term operation.

Precision rolling and forming of steel plates into curved sections for the 100,000 m³ ammonia storage tank.
Project Plate Quantities and Thickness Distribution
The total steel demand for this ammonia storage tank project is several thousand tons, mainly distributed across different tank sections:
P355NL2 – Inner & Outer Tank Shell Plates
- Lower shell courses: 50 mm thickness – approx. 2,000 tons
- Middle shell courses: 25 mm thickness – approx. 1,400 tons
- Upper shell courses: 10 mm thickness – approx. 500 tons
P275NL2 – Tank Bottom Plates
- Thickness: 10–15 mm – approx. 750 tons
P275NL2 – Suspended Roof Structure
- Thickness: 5–8 mm – approx. 180 tons
S275JR – Outer Roof (Ambient Structure)
- Thickness: 10 mm – approx. 450 tons
To improve tank fabrication efficiency and reduce circumferential welds, the project also requires wide steel plates to minimize welding joints, which helps reduce the potential risk of SCC in ammonia service conditions.

Formed steel segments wrapped and racked for protection, ready for 100,000 m³ ammonia storage tank assembly.
