ASTM A203 Grade A and ASTM A204 Grade A are both specifications for alloy steel plates used in the construction of welded pressure vessels and boilers. While they serve similar industrial applications, they are formulated with different primary alloying elements to meet distinct performance requirements, particularly concerning service temperature.

ASTM A203 Grade A is a nickel-alloy steel plate. Its defining characteristic is the addition of approximately 2.25% nickel, which significantly enhances its toughness and resistance to brittle fracture at low temperatures . According to the ASTM A203 standard, this grade has a minimum yield strength of 255 MPa and a tensile strength range of 450-585 MPa . The material is typically supplied in a normalized condition to refine its grain structure . Its primary application is in equipment designed for low-temperature service, such as cryogenic storage tanks for liquefied gases (e.g., LNG), where maintaining ductility under cold conditions is critical.

ASTM A204 Grade A is a molybdenum-alloy steel plate. It relies on molybdenum as the primary alloying element to provide enhanced strength at elevated temperatures . As specified in the ASTM A204 standard, Grade A also has a minimum yield strength of 255 MPa and a tensile strength range of 450-585 MPa . The steel is manufactured using a killed steel practice to ensure a uniform structure . This grade is intended for use in high-temperature pressure vessel applications, such as boilers and other equipment where resistance to creep and good performance at elevated temperatures are required.
