EN10025-2 is the European standard for hot-rolled structural steel products. S235JR is a grade under this standard and the addition of "+N" denotes that the material is normalized. This means
S235JR+N has undergone a controlled heating process to improve its mechanical properties.
Differences Between S235JR+AR and S235JR+N Steel Grades:
1.S235JR+AR VS S235JR+N Process Definition
+AR (As-Rolled): Indicates hot-rolled condition, where the steel undergoes no special rolling or heat treatment, only conventional hot-rolling processes for forming.
+N (Normalized/Normalized Formed): Indicates normalized or normalized-formed condition, where the steel is rolled within specific temperature ranges and/or undergoes subsequent normalizing treatment, achieving properties equivalent to normalized materials.
Steel Grade specifications: EN 10025-2 S235JR common carbon structural steel plate
Relative steel grades:S235JR,S235JRG2,S235J0,S235J2,S275JR,S275J0,S275J2,

S235JR steel plate--A structural grade (S) with at minimum yield strength of 235 N/mm²m, the JR designation confirms that the steel has undergone longitudinal Chary V-Notch impact testing at 27J (Joules) at room temperature.
S235JR+AR--A structural grade (S) with the same minimum yield strength of 235 N/mm²m, but supplied in an 'as rolled condition'.
S235JR+N plate--A structural grade (S) with the same minimum yield strength of 235 N/mm²m, but supplied in an 'Normalized condition'.
2.S235JR+AR and S235JR+N Performance Characteristics
+AR (As-Rolled):
Yield strength ≥ 235 MPa, tensile strength 360–510 MPa
Impact energy at room temperature (20°C) ≥ 27J (JR grade)
+N (Normalized/Normalized Formed):
Refined grain structure through normalizing, improving toughness and uniformity
Impact performance is equivalent to +AR, but the internal microstructure is more stable
3.S235JR+AR and S235JR+N Application Scenarios
+AR (As-Rolled): Suitable for general construction structures, mechanical components, and other applications where low-temperature toughness is not a critical requirement.
+N (Normalized/Normalized Formed): Primarily used in applications requiring higher structural uniformity or subsequent processing (e.g., welding), such as ships, pressure vessels, and other critical components.
4. S235JR+AR VS S235JR+N Additional Differences
Cost: Due to additional heat treatment processes, +N is typically more expensive than +AR.
Standard Compliance: +N can substitute applications requiring normalized materials, while +AR is limited to as-rolled conditions.
Please note: Generally, the thickness of S235JR+AR is less than 10mm, and the thickness of S235JR+N is more than 10mm and can be normalized.
