Recently, the ASTM A517/A517M high-strength pressure vessel steel plates produced by GNEE STEEL were shipped from Shanghai Port to Australia, where they will be used for manufacturing the outer shell of large-scale crushing equipment of a mining company.
During the preliminary inquiry, the Australian customer clearly stated their demand: "The equipment needs to withstand high-frequency impact loads, so the steel plates must have high strength and wear resistance." In response to the standard characteristics of ASTM A517/A517M (minimum yield strength of ≥690MPa, tensile strength of 795-930MPa, delivered in quenched + tempered condition, and suitable for high-strength pressure vessels and structural components), GNEE's technical team provided a customized solution: adopting micro-alloyed composition design to improve toughness, using controlled rolling and controlled cooling technology to ensure uniform performance of the steel plates in the thickness direction, and simultaneously providing supporting welding process guidelines.
During the communication, the customer proposed that "the steel plates must meet the requirements of the Australian AS 1548 standard". GNEE immediately coordinated with a third-party testing organization (Bureau Veritas, BV) to conduct inspections in accordance with the dual standards. The final test report showed that the impact energy (≥40J at -40℃) and hardness (HB220-260) of the steel plates all met the requirements. After the production of the first batch of 120 tons of steel plates (specifications: 16-30mm × 2000-3200mm × 9000mm) was completed, the customer sent engineers to the factory for acceptance. After on-site random sampling and testing, the engineers stated: "The quality of GNEE's high-strength steel plates has reached the international advanced level, and we will give priority to cooperation in subsequent projects."
This delivery marks the successful entry of GNEE's high-strength pressure vessel steel plates into the high-end market of developed countries.

What is ASTM A517 equivalent to?
ASTM A517 is equivalent to US T-1 steel materials. A517 steel is typically used in fusion welded boilers and other pressure vessels, while A514 steel is often used in welded bridges and other structures. A514 steel is also equivalent to US A709 HPS 100W steel.
What is ASTM A 517 material?
The ASTM A517 specification is the Standard Specification for Pressure Vessel Plates, Alloy Steel, High-Strength, Quenched and Tempered material used in the application of fusion welded boilers and pressure vessels.
What is the yield strength of ASTM A517?
A517 Grade E is available in thicknesses up to 6.0 inches and has a minimum yield strength of 100 ksi up to 2.5 inches in thickness and 90 ksi for plates greater than 2.5 inches to 6 inches in thickness.
What is the difference between ASTM A514 and A517?
The main difference is their intended use: ASTM A514 is for structural applications like bridges and buildings, while ASTM A517 is for high-pressure applications like boilers and vessels. While both are quenched and tempered alloy steels with identical chemical compositions and similar mechanical properties for corresponding grades, A514 follows structural standards (ASTM A6), whereas A517 is for pressure vessels (ASTM A20).
