Difference between S500QL1 and S550QL1

S500QL1 and S550QL1 are high-strength, quenched and tempered structural steel plates manufactured to the European standard EN 10025-6. The designation specifies their minimum yield strength (500 MPa and 550 MPa respectively), with the "QL1" suffix indicating their delivery condition: Quenched (Q) and Tempered (T) with longitudinal (L1) impact toughness testing at -40°C or -60°C. These grades are engineered for critical structural components that require an excellent combination of high strength, good low-temperature toughness, and weldability, such as in heavy-duty mobile cranes, mining equipment, offshore structures, and transportation vehicles.

 

Key Differences:

The fundamental difference is their strength level. S500QL1 offers a yield strength of 500 MPa, while S550QL1 provides a higher yield strength of 550 MPa. This increment allows S550QL1 to withstand greater loads or enable weight savings in design.

To achieve the higher strength while maintaining the stringent QL1 toughness requirements, S550QL1 requires a more carefully balanced chemical composition. It typically involves controlled additions of micro-alloying elements (like Niobium, Vanadium) and slightly adjusted levels of carbon and manganese during the quenching and tempering process. This results in a marginally higher carbon equivalent (Ceq) for S550QL1 compared to S500QL1. Consequently, the fabrication of S550QL1, particularly welding, demands slightly more stringent procedures. Welding S550QL1 often requires stricter control of preheating temperatures, the use of qualified low-hydrogen consumables, careful management of heat input, and may necessitate post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) in thick sections or high-restraint joints to mitigate the risk of hydrogen-induced cracking and preserve toughness.
