S500QL and S550QL are high-strength, quenched and tempered structural steel plates manufactured to the European standard EN 10025-6. The designation specifies their minimum yield strength (500 MPa and 550 MPa respectively), with the "QL" suffix indicating their delivery condition: Quenched (Q) and Tempered (T) with guaranteed impact toughness (L) at -40°C. These grades are engineered for critical welded structures requiring an excellent balance of high strength, good toughness, and weldability, such as in heavy construction machinery, mobile cranes, mining equipment, and transportation vehicles.
Key Differences:
The fundamental difference is their strength level. S500QL offers a yield strength of 500 MPa, while S550QL provides a higher yield strength of 550 MPa. This increment allows S550QL to withstand greater loads or enable marginal weight savings in design.
To achieve the higher strength while maintaining the toughness requirements, S550QL requires a more precisely controlled chemical composition. It typically involves optimized additions of micro-alloying elements (like Niobium, Vanadium) and adjusted levels of carbon and manganese during the quenching and tempering process. This results in a slightly higher carbon equivalent (Ceq) for S550QL compared to S500QL. Consequently, the fabrication of S550QL, particularly welding, may demand somewhat stricter procedures. Welding S550QL often requires careful control of preheating temperatures, the use of qualified low-hydrogen consumables, and management of heat input to mitigate the risk of hydrogen-induced cracking, especially in thicker sections.
