BV E420 and BV E460 are high-strength structural steel plates certified by Bureau Veritas (BV) for critical marine and offshore engineering applications, including shipbuilding, hull structures, and offshore modules. These grades are designed to offer excellent strength combined with good toughness, weldability, and cold-forming properties to withstand harsh environmental conditions. The "E" denotes their use in engineering structures, and the numerical suffix (420, 460) indicates the minimum yield strength in megapascals (MPa). Thus, BV E420 guarantees a yield strength of at least 420 MPa, while BV E460 guarantees at least 460 MPa.
Key Differences
The primary distinction lies in their strength grade and resulting performance trade-offs. BV E460 provides approximately 9.5% higher minimum yield strength than BV E420 (460 MPa vs. 420 MPa), granting it greater load-bearing capacity. This allows for the design of lighter structures or components subjected to higher stresses, contributing to weight reduction-a crucial factor in marine design. However, achieving this higher strength in E460 typically comes at the cost of slightly lower ductility and impact toughness compared to E420. Consequently, BV E420 often demonstrates better formability and may offer superior fracture resistance at low temperatures, making it favorable for applications requiring extensive cold forming or operating in very cold climates. The selection between them hinges on the specific design priorities: choose E460 for higher strength and weight efficiency; opt for E420 for enhanced formability and toughness.
