Corrosion Resistance
| Corrosive Agent | Concentration (%) | Temperature (°C) | Resistance Rating | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chlorides | 3-5 | 20-60 | Fair | Risk of pitting |
| Sulfur Dioxide | 0.1-0.5 | 20-40 | Good | Moderate resistance |
| Acids | 1-10 | 20-60 | Poor | Not recommended |
| Alkalis | 1-5 | 20-60 | Fair | Risk of stress corrosion |
Corten B Steel exhibits excellent resistance to atmospheric corrosion, particularly in urban and industrial environments. However, it is susceptible to pitting in chloride-rich environments, such as coastal areas. Compared to other weathering steels like ASTM A588 and EN S355J2W, Corten B offers similar corrosion resistance but may perform differently under specific conditions due to its unique alloying elements.
Heat Resistance
| Property/Limit | Temperature (°C) | Temperature (°F) | Remarks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Max Continuous Service Temp | 480 | 900 | Suitable for structural use |
| Max Intermittent Service Temp | 600 | 1112 | Short-term exposure |
| Scaling Temperature | 600 | 1112 | Risk of oxidation |
At elevated temperatures, Corten B Steel maintains its strength and corrosion resistance, making it suitable for applications in environments where heat exposure is a concern. However, care must be taken to avoid prolonged exposure to temperatures above its scaling limit, which can lead to oxidation and degradation of the material.
Weldability
| Welding Process | Recommended Filler Metal (AWS Classification) | Typical Shielding Gas/Flux | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| MIG | ER70S-6 | Argon + CO2 | Good for thin sections |
| TIG | ER70S-2 | Argon | Excellent for precision work |
| SMAW | E7018 | - | Requires preheat |
Corten B Steel is generally considered to have good weldability. Preheating is recommended to minimize the risk of cracking, especially in thicker sections. Post-weld heat treatment may also be beneficial to relieve stresses.
