ABS EH32 is a higher-strength structural steel plate certified by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for shipbuilding and marine applications. The "E" grade signifies it is impact tested at -40°C, ensuring excellent toughness for extreme cold environments such as Arctic operations . It has a minimum yield strength of 315 MPa (46 ksi) and tensile strength ranging from 440 to 590 MPa (64-85 ksi), with minimum elongation of 22% . The chemical composition is strictly controlled with carbon ≤0.18% and manganese 0.90-1.60% . This grade is widely used for hull structures, offshore platforms, and marine components in cold regions .
ABS EH40 is a higher-strength marine steel plate also certified by ABS with impact toughness tested at -40°C . The "40" denotes a minimum yield strength of 390 MPa (57 ksi) and tensile strength ranging from 510 to 650 MPa (74-94 ksi), with minimum elongation of 22% . The chemical composition is similar to EH32 with carbon ≤0.18%, manganese 0.90-1.60%, and fine grain treatment . This grade is designed for demanding structural components in shipbuilding, offshore drilling units, and marine structures requiring higher strength .
Both ABS EH32 and ABS EH40 are ABS-certified higher-strength marine steels with exceptional low-temperature toughness tested at -40°C, ensuring reliable performance in Arctic and harsh marine environments. Their primary difference lies in strength level: EH32 offers a minimum yield strength of 315 MPa with tensile strength of 440-590 MPa, suitable for general high-strength hull construction and offshore structures, while EH40 provides a higher minimum yield strength of 390 MPa with tensile strength reaching 510-650 MPa, designed for more demanding load-bearing applications requiring superior strength. Both grades feature controlled chemical composition and maintain good weldability for critical marine service.
