Difference between S275J0 and S275JR steel plate

Jan 09, 2026 Leave a message

S275J0 and S275JR are European standard (EN 10025-2) structural carbon steels with the same minimum yield strength (275 MPa for thinner plates) but differ in their impact toughness, tested via Charpy V-notch. S275JR requires 27 Joules (J) at +20°C, while S275J0 needs 27J at 0°C, making S275J0 better for cooler conditions, whereas S275J2 (another grade) is tested at -20°C. Both are versatile for general construction, bridges, and machinery, chosen based on the service temperature's toughness demand.

Key Differences & Similarities

"S": Indicates Structural Steel.

"275": Denotes a minimum yield strength of 275 MPa for plates up to 16mm thick, decreasing with thickness.

"JR" vs. "J0": The suffix defines the impact test temperature for a minimum energy absorption of 27 Joules.

S275JR: Tested at +20°C (Room Temperature).

S275J0: Tested at 0°C (Cold Temperature).

Applications: Both are used in general construction, bridges, shipbuilding, and automotive parts, but the choice depends on the lowest expected service temperature to ensure sufficient toughness.

In essence, if structure will experience temperatures near or below freezing, S275J0 offers superior low-temperature performance compared to S275JR, while S275J2 is even better for colder environments.
