ASTM A242 weathering steel performs considerably better than carbon structural steel with or without added copper.

ASTM A242 corten steel sheet metal Products Details
A242 Type1 steel grade is a hot rolled structural steel product with improved resistance to atmospheric corrosion under technical delivery conditions. The main alloying elements are chromium-nickel and copper, with the addition of phosphorus to give it excellent self-protection. When the steel reacts with atmospheric elements, over time the material forms a layer of rust that essentially protects the steel from corrosion.
ASTM-compliant A242 Type1 corrosion-resistant steel plate is primarily used for container steel.
In addition, A242 Type1 steel offers improved resistance to atmospheric corrosion in a wide range of applications: construction, chimneys, fabrication, trucks, silos, towers and bridges.
The alloying of A242 Type1 steel with copper and chromium ensures the formation of a firmly adhering protective layer of rust and at the same time gives it an attractive appearance.
