Steel Sheet Piling

Steel sheet pile is a steel section with a locking port, its cross-section has a straight plate shape, groove and Z-shaped, etc., with a variety of sizes and interlocking forms. The common ones are Larson type, Lackawanna type and so on. Its advantages are: high strength, easy to penetrate into the hard soil layer; can be constructed in deep water, if necessary, with diagonal support to become a cage. Waterproof performance is good; can be composed of various shapes of cofferdams as needed, and can be reused many times, so it is widely used.

grades of steel sheet pilling

In the United States, sheet piling is specified by reference to the ASTM standard. The basic grade is ASTM A572 Gr 50, with many manufacturers adopting ASTM A572 Gr 60 as the new standard.

In addition, other grades of piling steel have been developed for use when corrosion is a concern. astm A690 and A588 are steels with a yield strength of 50 ksi (345 MPa) and formulations that have been shown to extend service life. astm A690 has been shown to reduce the rate of corrosion in the splash zone by a factor of 2 to 3. A588, also referred to as a weathering steel, is resistant to corrosion in atmospheric zones.

Classification of steel sheet piles

Steel sheet pile products are divided into two types according to the production process: cold-formed thin-walled steel sheet piles and hot-rolled steel sheet piles.

(1) There are two types of cold-formed steel sheet piles, namely, non-bite type cold-formed steel sheet piles (also known as trench plate) and bite type cold-formed steel sheet piles (categorized into L-type, S-type, U-type and Z-type). Production process: the use of thinner sheet (commonly used thickness of 8mm ~ 14mm) in the cold-formed unit of continuous roll forming. Advantages: less investment in production lines, lower production costs, flexible control of product sizing. Disadvantages: the thickness of each part of the pile body is the same, the cross-section size can not be optimized resulting in an increase in the amount of steel, the shape of the locking portion is difficult to control, the joints are not tightly fastened, can not be stopped, and the pile is prone to tearing in the process of using the pile body.

(2) Hot rolled steel sheet piles in the world mainly have dozens of specifications in several categories such as U-type, Z-type, AS-type, H-type, etc. Z-type and AS-type steel sheet piles are more complicated in production, processing and installation process, and are mainly used in Europe and the United States; U-type piles are mainly used in China. Production process: rolled and shaped at high temperature by steel mill. Advantages: standardized size, superior performance, reasonable cross-section, high quality, locking mouth bite with tight water insulation. Disadvantages: greater technical difficulty, higher production cost, specification series is not flexible.
