SA542 is suitable for two 2¼Cr-1Mo and three Cr-Mo-V alloy steel plates used in the quenched and tempered condition for the manufacture of welded pressure vessels and components.
SA542 is supplied in five types of steel, designated as "A", "B", "C", "D D" and "E". Type "B" is identical to type "A" except that the carbon, phosphorus, sulfur and nickel range limits are different. The steels are also divided into five categories with strengths listed below. type "E" has only category 4 and 4a steels.
The maximum thickness of steel plates is limited only by the ability of the chemical composition to meet the specified mechanical property requirements. The minimum thickness of steel plate is limited to 3/16in. (5mm)
SA542 steelmaking method: SA542 steel shall be a quenched steel and shall meet the fine austenite grain size requirements of the A20/A20M standard.
The chemical composition and mechanical properties of SA542 can be referred to standard ASME/ASTM.
