ASME SA516-Pressure Vessel Steel(PVQ)Plate
ASME SA516(ASTM A516) is a specification for carbon steel plates used in pressure vessels and boilers for medium-low temperature and medium-low pressure environments. The different grades of SA516 (e.g., Grade 55,60,65,70) vary primarily in their Chemical Requirements and Tensile Requirements, which determine their suitability for specific applications.The most commonly used of these is the Gr.70.

The differences in chemical composition and mechanical properties of the different grades determine their specific use:
Gr 55:Low carbon content (≤0.27%), moderate manganese content (0.85~1.20%), good weldability and low-temperature toughness (-45℃ impact test optional). The tensile strength is 380~515 MPa and the yield strength is ≥205 MPa.
Low-temperature pressure vessels: such as liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage tanks, liquid nitrogen/liquid oxygen containers, etc., suitable for environments above -45℃.
Low-pressure vessels: atmospheric pressure storage tanks, reaction kettles, heat exchanger shells, etc.
Petrochemical equipment: desulfurization tower, distillation tower, and other scenarios with low corrosive requirements.
Boiler components: low-pressure boiler ladle, header, etc.
Gr 60:Slightly higher carbon content (≤0.30%), elevated manganese content (0.85~1.50%), tensile strength of 415~550 MPa, yield strength ≥220 MPa. better balance of strength and toughness.
Medium pressure vessels: separators, buffer tanks, etc. in petroleum refining.
Chemical equipment: ammonia synthesis tower, urea reactor and other occasions requiring medium strength.
Power industry: boiler ladle, superheater shell (working temperature ≤ 350 ℃).
Shipbuilding: secondary pressure-bearing parts of liquefied gas carriers.
Gr 65:Further increase in carbon and manganese content (C ≤ 0.31%, Mn ≤ 1.60%), tensile strength 450 ~ 585 MPa, yield strength ≥ 240 MPa. Higher strength, but the welding needs to be preheated (e.g., 150 ℃ or more).
High-pressure vessel: ammonia reactor, hydrogenation reactor and other equipment subject to high pressure.
Energy equipment: high-temperature and high-pressure parts of power station boilers (need to be used with heat insulation layer).
Heavy-duty storage tanks: reinforcement rings or top plates of large petroleum storage tanks.
Low-temperature applications: -60℃ impact requirements can be met through normalizing treatment, used for polar equipment.

Gr 70:Highest strength grade (tensile strength 485~620 MPa, yield strength ≥260 MPa), but plasticity and weldability are relatively reduced, requiring strict control of the welding process.
Extreme pressure environments: high pressure gas storage tanks (e.g. CNG tanks), auxiliary pressure vessels for nuclear power plants.
Heavy-duty structures: support frames or high-strength shells for large chemical equipment.
Special applications: mobile pressure vessels (e.g. tank trucks) where weight reduction is required, thinning of wall thickness through high strength.
