Special Steel for Cryogenic Pressure Vessels: Detailed Introduction to 07Ni5DR Steel Plates
I. Basic Information
07Ni5DR steel plate is a high-performance steel plate for low-temperature vessels, featuring high strength, high toughness and excellent low-temperature impact performance.
It is mainly used in manufacturing storage tanks for storing and transporting liquefied natural gas (LNG) as well as ultra-low temperature vessels for LNG ships. Meanwhile, it is also widely applied in the petroleum, chemical, pharmaceutical, food and other industries for manufacturing low-temperature pressure vessels.
Meaning of the grade:
"07" indicates that the carbon (C) content is ≤ 0.07%;
"Ni5" indicates that the average content of nickel (Ni) is 4.75% - 5.25%;
"DR" is the abbreviation of "cryogenic vessel".
II.Chemical Composition
Main elements:
- Nickel (Ni): 4.75% - 5.25% (core alloying element);
- Carbon (C): ≤ 0.10%;
- Silicon (Si): 0.10% - 0.35%;
- Manganese (Mn): 0.30% - 0.80%;
Other alloying elements include chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), molybdenum (Mo), vanadium (V), niobium (Nb), etc., all of which are controlled at relatively low levels.
III. Performance Characteristics
Cryogenic Performance:
The minimum service temperature can reach -120°C, maintaining good impact toughness and mechanical properties.
Implements the standard GB/T 713.4-2023 (effective from March 2024).
Mechanical Properties:
Tensile strength: 530~700MPa;
Yield strength: ≥370MPa for thickness 5~30mm, ≥360MPa for 30~50mm, ≥350MPa for 50~80mm;
Elongation: ≥20%.
Other Characteristics:
Excellent weldability and corrosion resistance (resistant to acids, alkalis, etc.);
Superior thermal conductivity, helping to maintain stable temperature inside the vessel.
IV. Application Fields
LNG storage tanks, ultra-low temperature vessels for LNG ships;
Cryogenic equipment in chemical, petroleum, marine engineering, nuclear energy and other industries (such as CO₂ absorption towers, methanol washing towers).
V. Delivery Status
Usually delivered in the state of offline quenching + tempering (quenched and tempered). For plates with thickness ≤12mm, the process of double normalizing + tempering can be adopted, with the tempering temperature not lower than 540°C.
