S275NL and S460NL are weldable, fine-grain structural steels under European standard EN 10025-3, differing primarily in strength: S275NL has a minimum yield strength of 275 MPa, while S460NL is stronger, with a minimum yield of 460 MPa, making S460NL ideal for heavier loads and critical components like bridges, offshore structures, and cranes, both offering excellent low-temperature toughness (NL denotes normalising rolled with low-temperature impact testing).

S275NL
Yield Strength: Minimum 275 MPa (for thicknesses ≤ 16mm).
Tensile Strength: Around 370-510 MPa.
Application: Used in general welded structures requiring good weldability and toughness, but with lower strength demands than S460NL.
S460NL
Yield Strength: Minimum 460 MPa (for thicknesses ≤ 16mm).
Tensile Strength: Around 540-720 MPa.
Toughness: Excellent low-temperature toughness, often at -50°C.
Application: Heavy-duty, high-stress applications like bridges, offshore platforms, wind turbine towers, and heavy machinery.
Key Differences & Similarities
Strength: S460NL offers significantly higher strength (460 MPa yield) than S275NL (275 MPa yield).
Application: S460NL for heavy-duty; S275NL for lighter or general structural work.
Standard: Both fall under EN 10025-3, meaning they are weldable and fine-grained, supplied normalized (or normalized-rolled) for consistent properties.
"NL" Designation: Indicates normalized (N) and low-temperature impact tested (L), ensuring good performance in cold conditions.
