Welding Process and Precautions
Welding of the Base Layer (A516Gr70)
Pre-welding preparation: The preheating temperature is 150–250°C, and low-hydrogen welding materials (such as E7015) are selected to reduce the risk of hydrogen-induced cracks.
Welding parameters: For gas shielded welding, the current is 100–200A, the voltage is 20–30V, and the welding speed is 5–10mm/s; for submerged arc welding, H08MnA welding wire + SJ101 flux can be used.
Post-welding treatment: Post-heat treatment (holding at 600–650°C for 2 hours) is performed to eliminate residual stress, and non-destructive testing (RT/UT) is conducted if necessary.
Welding of the Cladding Layer (904L)
Selection of welding materials: ER385 welding wire (with composition matching 904L) or E385-16 welding electrodes are used to avoid carbon contamination (carbon content ≤0.02%).
Process control:
Welding with low heat input (current ≤150A, interpass temperature ≤100°C) to reduce sensitization in the heat-affected zone.
GTAW (gas tungsten arc welding) or GMAW (gas metal arc welding) is adopted, while SAW (submerged arc welding) is avoided to prevent the reduction of corrosion resistance due to excessive fusion ratio.
Post-welding treatment: Generally, no heat treatment is required. If it is necessary to enhance corrosion resistance, solution treatment can be carried out by heating to 1100–1150°C followed by rapid cooling.
