Alloy 31 (Nicrofer 3127 hMo) is an advanced iron-nickel-chromium-molybdenum super-austenitic stainless steel with nitrogen additions. This high-performance alloy closes the gap between high-alloyed austenitic special stainless steels and nickel alloys, providing exceptional corrosion resistance in aggressive environments. Alloy 31 typically contains 30-32% nickel, 26-28% chromium, 6-7% molybdenum, and 0.15-0.25% nitrogen, creating a stable austenitic structure with outstanding performance characteristics.

Execution Standards for Alloy 31

Gangsteel's Alloy 31 products comply with international standards:

ASTM B625: For Alloy 31 plate, sheet, and strip.

ASTM B622: For seamless Nicrofer 31 pipe and tubing.

ASTM B581: For Nicrofer 31 round bar.

ASME SB-625/SB-622: For corrosion-resistant applications.

DIN 1.4562: European standard for UNS N08031.

Note: Products are supplied with mill test certificates and tested per DNV, BV, or SGS standards, ensuring compliance with Nicrofer 31 chemical composition and Alloy 31 material properties.

Alloy 31 Fabrication Information

Alloy 31 can be readily fabricated using conventional methods, with some specific considerations for optimal results:

Hot and Cold Forming

Hot forming should be performed in the temperature range of 1,200 to 1,050°C (2,192 to 1,922°F) with subsequent rapid cooling in water or air. For cold forming, the material should be in the annealed condition, with intermediate annealing necessary for major cold forming work. Any cold forming exceeding 15% requires final solution annealing.

Welding

Alloy 31 can be welded using conventional processes such as GTAW (TIG), GMAW (MIG/MAG), and plasma welding. Welding should be performed using the stringer bead technique with low heat input. The interpass temperature should not exceed 120°C (248°F). Suitable filler metals include those matching the Alloy 31 composition or nickel-based alloys with similar or higher alloying content.

Machining

The alloy should be machined in the heat-treated condition. Due to its increased work hardening rate compared to conventional austenitic stainless steels, machining should be performed with lower cutting speeds, adequate depth of cut to penetrate below the work-hardened layer, and sufficient cooling.

Descaling and Pickling

Oxides on Alloy 31 are more adherent than on standard stainless steels. Grinding with fine abrasive belts or discs is recommended before pickling. Oxide layers should be destroyed by abrasive blasting or fine grinding before pickling in nitric-hydrofluoric acid mixtures.

What is uns N08031 material?

NAS325N (UNS N08031) is a stainless steel with extremely superior corrosion resistance and can be used in many severe corrosion environments. In addition to local corrosion resistance approaching that of nickelbase corrosionresistant alloys, it also provides excellent acid resistance.

What is Alloy 31?

Alloy 31(UNS N08031), or Nicrofer 3127 hMo, is a high-alloy austenitic nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy with nitrogen, developed for superior corrosion resistance in severe environments, including nitric acid, sulfuric acid, and chloride-rich conditions. With high molybdenum (6.0-7.0%) and nitrogen (0.15-0.25%), Alloy 31 material resists pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking, making Alloy 31 sheet ideal for chemical reactors and flue gas desulfurization systems. It outperforms Alloy 28 in mixed acid environments due to higher chromium and nitrogen content.

How Does Alloy 31 Compare to Alloy 28?

Alloy 31(UNS N08031) offers superior resistance to nitric and mixed acids due to higher chromium (26.0-28.0%) and nitrogen, while Alloy 28 (UNS N08028) excels in phosphoric acid resistance due to higher copper. Alloy 31 sheet is preferred for flue gas desulfurization and nitric acid service.

Why Choose GNEE steel's Alloy 31 Sheet?

Superior Corrosion Resistance: Alloy 31 material excels in nitric, sulfuric, and chloride-rich environments, surpassing Alloy 625 in specific acid conditions.

High-Temperature Stability: Maintains integrity up to 1000°F (538°C), ideal for Alloy 31 sheet in chemical processing.

Excellent Weldability: Ensures corrosion resistance in welded Alloy 31 sheet and pipe with minimal risk of intergranular corrosion.
