Firstly S355J2 steel plate rolling from steel specification EN 10025-2,and S355NL steel plate rolling from steel specification EN 10025-3 hot rolled structural steels with Normalized or Normalized rolled technical delivery conditions.

This means S355J2 can be offered without Normalized heat treatment, but S355NL have to be offered with Normalized heat treatment or Normalized rolled condition.

Key Differences

In the second,S355J2 steel plate shall be done charpy impacting test at low temperature minus 20 Degree Celsius, but S355NL steel plate shall be done this test at low temperature minus 50 Degree Celsius with minimum impact energy value 27J on longitudinal.

Key Applications

info-291-274

S355J2:

Building frames, warehouses, and non-critical machinery.

Environments above -20°C.

S355NL:

Offshore platforms, bridges in cold climates, wind turbine towers.

High-stress, low-temperature (down to -50°C) or cyclic loading conditions.

Cost & Availability

  • S355J2: Lower cost, widely available as hot-rolled stock.
  • S355NL: Higher cost due to micro-alloying and normalized processing; longer lead times.

Welding & Fabrication

  • S355J2: Requires preheating for thick sections (>30 mm).
  • S355NL: Better weldability due to fine grain and low impurities; suitable for critical welds without extensive preheating.

Summary

Choose S355J2 for cost-effective, general-purpose structures in moderate climates.

Opt for S355NL for extreme cold, fatigue-prone, or high-integrity applications.

FAQ

Q: What is S355NL?

A: S355NL is a high-strength structural steel with excellent impact toughness, particularly in low-temperature environments. It is used in applications where both strength and low-temperature toughness are required, such as in heavy construction, infrastructure, and offshore structures.

Q: What is the difference between S355J2 and S355NL?

A: S355J2: Requires preheating for thick sections (>30 mm). S355NL: Better weldability due to fine grain and low impurities; suitable for critical welds without extensive preheating. Choose S355J2 for cost-effective, general-purpose structures in moderate climates.

Q: What is S355J2 steel?

A: S355J2 is a medium tensile, low carbon manganese steel which is readily weldable and possess good impact resistance (also in sub-zero temperatures). This material is commonly supplied in the untreated or normalized condition. Machinability of this material is similar to that of mild steel.

Q: What temperature is the impact test for S355NL?

A: minus 50 Degree Celsius
In the second,S355J2 steel plate shall be done charpy impacting test at low temperature minus 20 Degree Celsius, but S355NL steel plate shall be done this test at low temperature minus 50 Degree Celsius with minimum impact energy value 27J on longitudinal.

Q: What is the impact of S355NL?

A: Characteristics of Grade S355NL: The impact absorption work test is performed in a low temperature environment of minus 50 degrees, and the impact value is not less than 27J.
