Both S355ML and S460ML are thermomechanically rolled (indicated by "M") fine-grain structural steel plates with specified low-temperature impact properties (indicated by "L"), conforming to EN 10025-4 . They are designed for heavy loaded welded structures requiring high toughness, excellent weldability, and resistance to brittle fracture even at sub-zero temperatures .
S355ML has a minimum yield strength of 355 MPa for thicknesses ≤16mm, tensile strength of 470-630 MPa, and minimum elongation of 22% . Its maximum carbon equivalent (CEV) is 0.36% .
S460ML offers significantly higher strength with minimum yield of 460 MPa (≤16mm), tensile strength of 540-720 MPa, but lower elongation of 17% . Its CEV is higher at 0.43% .
Key Differences:
Strength Level: S460ML provides approximately 30% higher yield strength than S355ML, allowing for substantial weight reduction in structural designs .
Chemical Composition: S460ML contains higher manganese (1.70% vs 1.60%) and permits higher vanadium (0.10% vs 0.05%), contributing to its enhanced strength .
Ductility: S355ML offers superior formability with 22% elongation versus 17% for S460ML .
Low-Temperature Toughness: Both maintain excellent impact properties down to -50°C/-60°C (40J longitudinal), though S460ML may have slightly reduced values for very thick sections.
