S355J0W and S355J0WP are European standard (EN 10025-5) weathering steels, also known as Corten steels, known for their enhanced atmospheric corrosion resistance, forming a protective rust layer (patina) to avoid painting.
The key difference is in their phosphorus content, with S355J0WP having higher phosphorus (0.06-0.15%) than S355J0W (max 0.035%), leading to slightly different corrosion performance, though both offer excellent protection for structures like bridges, railway cars, and offshore platforms. Both grades offer a minimum yield strength of 355 MPa, with 'J0' indicating a 20°C impact energy requirement, and 'W' signifies improved atmospheric corrosion resistance.
Understanding the Name
S: Structural Steel.
355: Minimum yield strength (MPa).
J0: Quality designation requiring a 20°C impact test.
W: Weathering (improved atmospheric corrosion resistance).
P: Added Phosphorus for enhanced corrosion resistance.

Key Distinction Summary
P (Phosphorus): The 'P' signifies a deliberate addition of Phosphorus, making S355J0WP more suited for its specific function in atmospheric/stack gas exposure.
Application Focus: S355J0WP is optimized for patina development in corrosive atmospheric environments, while S355J0W balances corrosion resistance with mechanical toughness for load-bearing uses.
S355J0W steel is widely used in high-speed rail bogies, welding, bolting and riveting parts. S355J0WP steel plate enhances the ability to resist atmospheric corrosion at ambient temperature. In order to achieve corrosion resistance, certain alloy elements are added, such as: P, Cu, Cr, Ni, Mo. Under various climatic conditions A protective oxide layer is formed on the metal surface.
