Difference between S355J0W and S235J0W steel plate

Jan 13, 2026 Leave a message

S355J0W and S235J0W are European standard (EN 10025-5) weathering (Corten) steels, both offering atmospheric corrosion resistance, but differ in strength, with S355J0W having a higher minimum yield strength (355 MPa) than S235J0W (235 MPa), making S355J0W suitable for heavier structural loads, while S235J0W is for lighter applications, both forming protective rust layers for durability.

S: Indicates Structural Steel.

235 / 355: The minimum guaranteed yield strength in megapascals (MPa) for thinner sections (e.g., up to 16mm).

J0: Specifies a 0°C minimum Charpy impact test energy level.

W: Denotes Weathering Steel, meaning it develops a stable, protective rust patina over time, reducing need for painting.
