DNV E420 is a high-strength shipbuilding steel certified by DNV (Det Norske Veritas) . The "E" indicates it is tested for impact toughness at -40°C . The number "420" specifies its minimum yield strength of 420 MPa . It has a tensile strength ranging from 530 to 680 MPa and offers excellent weldability and corrosion resistance. This grade is commonly used for constructing hulls, decks, and offshore structures requiring reliable performance in harsh marine environments.
DNV E500 is an extra-high-strength structural steel for marine applications, also certified by DNV . The "500" denotes a minimum yield strength of 500 MPa . It maintains the same low-temperature impact toughness at -40°C as the E-grade . With a higher tensile strength of 610-770 MPa , it is often supplied in thermomechanically controlled processed (TMCP) or quenched and tempered (QT) conditions . It is ideal for demanding structural components in ships, offshore drilling units, and platforms where superior strength is critical.
Both DNV E420 and DNV E500 are DNV-certified high-strength steels with excellent impact toughness tested at -40°C, ensuring reliability in cold marine conditions . Their key difference lies in strength: E420 has a minimum yield strength of 420 MPa, suitable for general high-strength hull construction, while E500 is an extra-high-strength grade with 500 MPa minimum yield, designed for more critical, load-bearing applications in advanced ship and offshore structures . Both require controlled processing and chemistry to achieve their superior mechanical properties.
