Difference between ABS D and CCS D steel plate

Feb 27, 2026 Leave a message

ABS D and CCS D are both normal-strength shipbuilding steel plates designed for hull construction and marine structures operating in moderate service conditions. They are certified by two major classification societies-ABS (American Bureau of Shipping) and CCS (China Classification Society)-and are technically equivalent in terms of mechanical properties and chemical composition.

ABS Grade D is certified by the American Bureau of Shipping and is defined as a normal-strength structural steel for shipbuilding applications . It has a minimum yield strength of 235 MPa and a tensile strength range of 400-520 MPa . The key characteristic of Grade D is its impact test temperature of -20°C, requiring minimum Charpy V-Notch impact energy of 27J (longitudinal average) . Typical applications include ship hulls, decks, bulkheads, and marine structures requiring improved low-temperature toughness compared to Grades A and B .

CCS Grade D is certified by the China Classification Society and serves as the direct equivalent to ABS D in the Chinese classification system . It shares identical mechanical property requirements: minimum yield strength of 235 MPa, tensile strength of 400-520 MPa, and minimum elongation of 22% . Like its ABS counterpart, CCS D requires impact testing at -20°C with minimum 27J energy.
