Overview SA 387 Gr 11 / SA 387 Gr 22
More common application of this grade is in Refineries, Power Plants, and certain areas of Chemical Plants in environments with elevated temperatures and limited corrosion concerns.
In the lower end of the temperature range SA 387 Gr 11 (1150 °F min tempering temperature) , and SA 387 Gr 22 (1250 °F min tempering temperature) are used. These grades can be specified in either class 1 or 2 and can also be provided in the Normalized & Tempered or Quenched and Tempered. For more severe environments we can perform API 934 Testing to supplement this grade.
- Provided in Normalized and Tempered or Quenched and Tempered
- Thickness' from 3/16" – 10"
- Supplemental testing available to simulate application and environment conditions
- Elevated temper to accommodate API 934

Corrosion Resistance
| Performance/Use | SA387 Gr11 | SA387 Gr22 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oxidation Resistance | Good | Excellent | Higher Cr content in Gr22 provides better protection |
| Hydrogen Attack Resistance | Good | Superior | Gr22 excels in high-pressure hydrogen environments |
| Sulfide Corrosion Resistance | Good | Excellent | Better for sour service conditions |
Selection Guidelines
Choose SA387 Gr11 when:
Service temperature is ≤540°C (1000°F)
Cost efficiency is a priority
Moderate creep resistance is sufficient
Standard pressure vessel applications in refineries and petrochemical plants
Choose SA387 Gr22 when:
Service temperature exceeds 540°C (1000°F) (up to 595°C/1100°F)
High creep resistance is critical
Hydrogen service or severe corrosion conditions exist
Design requires superior high-temperature strength and toughness
In summary, SA387 Gr22 is a higher-alloy variant of SA387 Gr11 with doubled Mo and nearly doubled Cr content, enabling it to perform reliably in more extreme high-temperature, high-pressure, and corrosive environments than Gr11.
What is SA 387 GR 22 material?
SA 387 Grade 22 Steel Plate
The SA 387 Grade 22 Steel is a pressure vessel steel made up of high-quality raw material and high technology. Commonly used for high-temperature tasks based on its high heat tolerance this steel plate can be exposed up to 600° while maintaining superb oxidation and corrosion resistance.
What is the difference between SA 387 Grade 11 CL 1 and Class 2?
The difference between SA 387 Grade 11 Class 1 and Class 2 Plate lies in their mechanical properties. However, they both have the same chemical composition. The tensile strength and yield strength of class 2 material is higher than that of class 1, whereas the elongation for class 1 is higher compared to class 2.
What is SA 387 GR 11 equivalent material?
SA 387 Grade 11 is a chrome-moly alloy steel for elevated temperature pressure vessels, with its direct equivalent being ASTM A387 Grade 11 (same standard, just different governing body) and international equivalents like EN 10028 13CrMoSi5-5 (European) or Germany's DIN 13CrMo44, all offering similar Cr-Mo content for corrosion resistance. It comes in Class 1 and 2, differing in tensile properties but sharing the same chemistry for high-temp, sour gas, and petrochemical applications
