DNV E500 and DNV E690 are ultra-high-strength structural steel plates certified by Det Norske Veritas (DNV) for the most demanding marine and offshore applications, such as Arctic-class vessels, deepwater offshore platforms, and high-stress naval structures. The "E" designation guarantees that the material's impact toughness is certified at the low temperature of -40°C, ensuring reliable performance in polar environments. The numerical suffix indicates the minimum yield strength in megapascals (MPa). Therefore, DNV E500 provides a minimum yield strength of 500 MPa, while DNV E690 offers a substantially higher 690 MPa.
Key Differences
The primary distinction is their strength level and the associated implications for design, fabrication, and cost. DNV E690 provides approximately 38% higher yield strength than E500. This exceptional strength allows for radical weight reduction and the design of structures capable of withstanding extreme loads, such as heavy ice forces or deepwater pressures. However, achieving this ultra-high strength in E690 requires sophisticated alloying (often involving advanced quenching and tempering processes) and results in significantly greater challenges in welding, cutting, and forming compared to E500. Consequently, DNV E500 offers a much more favorable balance of very high strength, reliable -40°C toughness, and practical weldability. The choice is thus a strategic one: Select DNV E690 only where its extreme strength is absolutely essential to meet structural or weight-saving goals, accepting higher fabrication complexity and cost. Opt for DNV E500 for applications that require robust performance in Arctic conditions but benefit from greater fabrication ease and proven service history.
