Difference between DNV E420 and DNV E460 steel plate

Jan 29, 2026 Leave a message

DNV E420 and DNV E460 are high-strength structural steel plates certified by Det Norske Veritas (DNV) for use in marine and offshore applications, such as ship hulls and offshore wind structures. These grades are engineered to provide an optimal combination of strength, toughness, and weldability in demanding service conditions. The "E" prefix specifically denotes that the material's impact toughness properties are guaranteed at a low temperature of -40°C. The numerical suffix indicates the minimum yield strength in megapascals (MPa). Therefore, DNV E460 offers a higher guaranteed yield strength of at least 460 MPa, compared to DNV E420's 420 MPa.

Key Differences

The primary distinction lies in their strength level and the resulting design implications. DNV E460 provides approximately 9.5% higher yield strength than E420. This enhanced strength allows for the design of lighter structures or increased load-bearing capacity, which is crucial for weight-sensitive applications like large vessel hulls or high-rise offshore platforms. However, achieving this higher strength in E460 typically involves more stringent alloying and controlled rolling processes, which can result in slightly lower ductility and a narrower window for optimal weldability compared to E420. Consequently, DNV E420 may be favored in applications where superior formability or ease of fabrication is a priority, while E460 is selected where maximizing strength-to-weight ratio is the key driver. In summary, the choice involves balancing structural efficiency (E460) against fabrication flexibility (E420) for projects operating in cold environments.
