Difference between DNV D420 and DNV D690 steel plate

Jan 29, 2026 Leave a message

DNV D420 and DNV D690 are structural steel plates certified by Det Norske Veritas (DNV) for marine and offshore use, representing two ends of the high-strength steel spectrum. The "D" designation in both grades indicates their impact toughness is certified at -20°C. The numerical suffix denotes the minimum yield strength in megapascals (MPa): DNV D420 provides 420 MPa, while DNV D690 delivers a much higher 690 MPa.

Key Differences

The core distinction lies in their strength level, typical applications, and fabricability. DNV D690 offers approximately 64% higher yield strength than D420. This ultra-high strength is essential for extreme applications like icebreaker hulls, heavy-lift vessel components, or high-pressure offshore nodes where minimizing structural weight is critical. However, achieving this strength typically requires complex quenching and tempering processes, resulting in significantly greater challenges in welding, cutting, and forming, along with higher cost. In contrast, DNV D420 is a versatile, cost-effective high-strength grade widely used in general ship hulls and offshore structures. It offers an excellent balance of strength, superior weldability and formability, and proven performance for most applications requiring reliable toughness down to -20°C. The choice is application-driven: Select D690 only where its extreme strength-to-weight ratio is indispensable; choose D420 for a robust, fabricable, and economical solution for the majority of high-strength marine structures.
