Difference between A633 Grade A and A633 Grade D steel plate

Feb 11, 2026 Leave a message

A633 Grade A and A633 Grade D are high-strength, low-alloy structural steel plates conforming to the ASTM A633 standard. They are designed for welded, bolted, or riveted structures requiring improved toughness at lower temperatures, such as in buildings, bridges, and other heavy construction applications in cold climates.

Key Differences:

The primary distinction is their strength level and notch toughness requirements. Both grades require a minimum yield strength of 50 ksi (345 MPa) for plates up to 1.5 inches (38 mm) thick, and 46 ksi (317 MPa) for thicker plates up to 4 inches (100 mm). However, the key differentiating factor is the mandatory Charpy V-notch impact testing. A633 Grade A has no specified impact requirement, making it a standard high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) grade for general structural use. In contrast, A633 Grade D is specifically required to achieve a minimum impact energy of 20 ft-lb (27 J) at -50°F (-45°C), qualifying it as a reliable material for low-temperature service where resistance to brittle fracture is critical.

This enhanced low-temperature toughness in Grade D is achieved through a more refined chemical composition and processing. Grade D typically has stricter limits on elements like phosphorus and sulfur for improved cleanliness, and may utilize micro-alloying with elements like Niobium (Columbium) or Vanadium for grain refinement. Consequently, A633 Grade D generally has a more controlled carbon equivalent (Ceq) and offers superior weldability and fracture resistance compared to Grade A, especially in thick sections and cold environments.
