S355J2W+N strips material is a weathering steel grade with enhanced atmospheric corrosion resistance due to the addition of Ni. It is specifically used in outdoor applications that are exposed to harsh weather conditions.
S355J2+N is a non alloy structural steel grade used for general structural purposes. It has lower level of corrosion resistance compared to S355J2W+N coils.

 

Is S355J2W the same as Corten B steel?

Yes, practically speaking. Corten B is a well-known proprietary trademark, while S355J2W is the official European standard (EN 10025-5) for structural weathering steel.
Both grades share almost identical chemical compositions (rich in Copper, Chromium, and Nickel) and offer the same 355 MPa minimum yield strength and excellent atmospheric corrosion resistance. If your engineering drawings specify Corten B, you can confidently use our S355J2W as a fully certified, globally recognized equivalent.

 

Why does the plate look black/grey instead of rusty? How long does it take to form the orange/brown patina?

By default, our S355J2W plates are delivered in the 'as-rolled' condition, meaning they have a dark grey mill scale on the surface, just like normal steel. The protective, rust-like patina naturally forms over 6 to 18 months when exposed to alternating wet and dry weather conditions outdoors.
Value-Added Service: If your architectural project requires the immediate aesthetic 'rusty' look, we also provide pre-rusting surface treatments (accelerated weathering) in our processing center before shipment.

 

Can we weld S355J2W using standard mild steel welding electrodes?

While S355J2W is highly weldable, we strongly advise against using standard mild steel consumables.
To ensure the weld seam has the same atmospheric corrosion resistance and eventually matches the color of the weathered plate, you must use weathering-grade welding consumables (such as ER80S-G or equivalent wires containing Cu and Ni). Using standard wires will cause the weld joints to corrode much faster than the plate itself, compromising structural safety. We can supply the matching welding wire along with your steel plate order.

 

My project is in a cold region. How do you guarantee the low-temperature toughness of S355J2W?

The 'J2' designation explicitly guarantees superior performance in sub-zero environments. During production, we strictly perform the Charpy V-Notch impact test at -20°C (guaranteeing ≥ 27 Joules). Furthermore, the carefully controlled addition of Nickel (Ni) in our S355J2W chemistry significantly enhances its resistance to brittle fracture in cold climates.
