A606 Weathering Steel is a unique material known for its distinctive patina. Weathering steel arrives unrusted and once exposed to the natural environment for a period of time, it takes on the appearance of rust.
Corten steel never completely stops rusting. Rust creates a protective layer that slows down future corrosion. The rusting process will eventually diminish, and from that point on, the finish becomes a protective layer for the base metal.
Weathered steel requires alternating cycles of wet and dry to form a properly adhered protective layer. Areas with salt-laden air, high rainfall, humidity, or persistent fog are usually unsuitable for weathering steel.

ASTM A606 Type 2 Corten steel plate is a weathering steel plate; when exposed to the atmosphere, a protective layer called patina forms on its surface to prevent rusting of the underlying surface. Corten steel sheet metal have high tensile strength, high yield strength, and low alloy content.ASTM A606 Type 2 steel plates are corrosion resistant because this alloy contains copper, nickel, and a high amount of phosphorus for enhanced corrosion resistance. These Cowden steel plates are coated with a layer of copper that forms a protective layer against corrosion when the plate is exposed to the atmosphere. These ASTM A606 Type 2 Cowden steel plates require no painting and can be used in all weather conditions.
As a result, ASTM A606 Type 2 corten material can be used to manufacture roofing materials, building structures such as bridges and harbor structures, vehicle fabrication, towers, oil derricks, containers, buildings, towers, and other structural components.
ASTM A606 Type 4 standard specifies requirements for high-strength, low-alloy hot- and cold-rolled sheet and strip with improved resistance to atmospheric corrosion. The standard applies to structural and other applications. ASTM A606 Type 4 steel has four times the corrosion resistance of Type 2 steel when compared to ordinary carbon structural steel plates.
