Atmospheric Steel
What is Atmospheric Steel?
Atmospheric Steel, also called corten steel, atmospheric corrosion resistant corten steel,Weathering Steel,Corrosion Resistant Steel.
COR-TEN steel is becoming more popular by roll formed product end-users. Its unique look and naturally oxidizing finish make it especially desirable for many architectural projects. Weathering steel, best-known under the trademark COR-TEN steel, is a group of steel alloys which were developed to obviate the need for painting, and form a stable rust-like appearance if exposed to the weather for several years. Weathering steel has increased resistance to atmospheric corrosion when compared to other steels. COR-TEN resists the corrosive effects of rain, snow, ice, fog, and other meteorological conditions by forming a coating of dark brown oxidation over the metal, which inhibits deeper penetration and negates the need for painting and costly rust-prevention maintenance over the years. In simple terms the steel is allowed to rust and that rust forms a protective coating that slows the rate of future corrosion.
Is weathering steel the same as corten steel?
Often used interchangeably, Corten and weathering steel are essentially the same material, offering enhanced strength and corrosion resistance. Corten steel is ideal for outdoor architectural and landscaping projects, exhibiting a patina (rust) that provides a protective layer from corrosion and atmospheric elements.
Is corten steel the same as mild steel?
Corten Steel and Mild Steel are Carbon Steels. Both made from Iron with slightly different chemical compositions. Corten Steel develops a protective layer that slows down the corrosion process. Mild Steel does not form a protective layer but aesthetically is very similar to Corten Steel.
Why is corten steel so expensive?
However, given Corten's longevity and lower maintenance needs, it represents a long-term investment. Mild steel is certainly a cost-effective alternative, but if a protective coating, such as powder coating or galvanising, is applied for added longevity, the cost comparison with Corten starts to level out.
Can you weld corten steel?
Yes, it is possible to weld corten steel to mild steel, but it requires careful attention to detail to ensure a strong and durable weld. Welders should use specialized welding techniques and filler materials, such as an E7018 electrode, to achieve the desired results.

Can I paint corten steel?
Extra Protection: Although Corten steel is durable, certain environments-like those with high humidity or saltwater exposure-can cause it to degrade faster. Paint adds a layer of defence. Uniform Finish: If your steel has uneven weathering or discolouration, paint can create a smooth and consistent surface.
Is corten steel better than stainless steel?
Unlike stainless steel, Corten Steel is a distinct type of alloy designed to weather gracefully over time, offering structural strength and an aesthetic quality that sets it apart.
Can you cut corten steel?
Corten steel cuts much the same as mild steel, but it is a bit tougher because of the copper and chromium mixed in. If you are set up with the right gear, it is straightforward. I usually grab an angle grinder with a good cut-off wheel for sheet metal or a plasma cutter if I want a really clean edge.
Can stainless steel be welded to corten steel?
The underframe assembly of rail coaches is manufactured with the help of metal active gas welding process. Both ends of the austenitic stainless steel plate are welded to corten steel on the floor assembly of the coaches. The butt weld is done to the joint.

how does corten steel weathering steel work?
Weathered steel finishes begin with a topcoat made of copper, phosphorus and silicon. It forms a textured, oxidized surface film on the panel, and over time, as the panel is exposed to different weather conditions such as rain or snow, it begins to rust to a distinctive bronze color.
Weathering steel is extremely resistant to corrosion caused by weather and other atmospheric conditions. Once the coating is gone, the steel ionizes, which keeps the steel from continuing to rust and you don't have to worry about panels rusting all the time. Steel base layers last as long as other finishes (so your roof or siding can last 40 to 70 years).
