Weathering steel Product Description
EN standard S355J2WP corten weathering steel is a hot rolled steel resistant to atmospheric corrosion. s is a structural steel, 355 is a yield strength of 355MPa, J2 requires -20° impact, the letter W indicates that the steel grade is resistant to atmospheric corrosion, P is the chemical element composition phosphorus.
S355J2WP steel's main alloying elements are chromium-nickel and copper, and added phosphorus, so that it has good self-protection properties. When S355J2WP steel reacts with elements in the atmosphere, over time the material will form a layer of rust, which essentially protects S355J2WP-steel from corrosion.

The Thickness Of S355J2WP vs. Phosphorus Dilemma: A Crucial Engineering Note
Because S355J2WP (Corten A equivalent) contains a high level of phosphorus, thick plates of this grade are extremely prone to brittle fracture and cold cracking during the welding process. As a rule of thumb, European standards strictly recommend restricting its thickness to 12mm (with an absolute maximum of 15mm).
If your project requires 30mm heavy plates, we highly recommend that your engineers update the blueprints to specify S355J2W (Corten B) or Q355NH. These grades feature lower phosphorus levels and guarantee superior structural integrity for heavy load-bearing applications.
S355J2W vs. S355J2WP vs. Q355NH: Which Weathering Steel Should You Choose?
When sourcing structural weathering steel for your next project, you will likely encounter three highly popular grades: S355J2W, S355J2WP, and Q355NH. While all three share the same minimum yield strength of 355 MPa, their chemical compositions, thickness limits, and ideal applications are fundamentally different.
Here is the ultimate technical and commercial breakdown to help you make the right choice.
1. S355J2WP: The Facade Expert (Corten A Equivalent)
- Standard: EN 10025-5 (European)
- Key Feature: High Phosphorus (P) Content (0.06% – 0.15%).
- What it does: The added phosphorus significantly accelerates the oxidation process, allowing the steel to form a dense, protective, and aesthetically pleasing orange-brown rust patina very quickly.
- The Catch (Thickness Limit): Because high phosphorus increases the risk of brittle fracture and cold cracking during welding, S355J2WP is strictly recommended for thin plates only (typically ≤ 12mm).
- Best For: Architectural facades, decorative outdoor screens, roofing, and thin-walled gas exhaust systems.
2. S355J2W: The Heavyweight Builder (Corten B Equivalent)
- Standard: EN 10025-5 (European)
- Key Feature: Low Phosphorus (P) Content (≤ 0.035%) & -20°C Impact Toughness ("J2").
- What it does: By reducing the phosphorus level and strictly controlling carbon and alloys, this grade offers exceptional weldability and structural integrity, even in extreme freezing temperatures.
- The Advantage: Unlike S355J2WP, S355J2W can be rolled into heavy thick plates (up to 150mm) without compromising welding safety or load-bearing capacity.
Best For: Heavy highway bridges, offshore structures, load-bearing infrastructure, and heavy construction equipment.
3. Q355NH: The Cost-Effective Alternative (Chinese GB Standard)
- Standard: GB/T 4171 (Chinese National Standard)
- Key Feature: High Availability & Ultimate Cost Efficiency.
- What it does: "Q" stands for Yield Strength (355 MPa), and "NH" stands for Nai Hou (Weathering). It is the exact Chinese equivalent to the European S355J2W / Corten B.
- The Pro Tip: If your project requires the -20°C impact test to match the "J2" requirement precisely, you should specify Q355NHD (The "D" denotes the -20°C impact test).
- Best For: Projects facing tight budgets or urgent deadlines. It offers the exact same mechanical properties and weather-resistance index as S355J2W but is available in massive ready stocks at Chinese ports, saving you 15%-20% in material costs.
S355J2W vs. S355J2WP vs. Q355N Head-to-Head Comparison Table
| Feature | S355J2WP | S355J2W | Q355NHD |
| Equivalent To | Corten A | Corten B | Corten B / S355J2W |
| Standard | EN 10025-5 | EN 10025-5 | GB/T 4171 |
| Yield Strength | ≥ 355 MPa | ≥ 355 MPa | ≥ 355 MPa |
| Phosphorus (P) % | High (0.06 - 0.15%) | Low (≤ 0.035%) | Low (≤ 0.030%) |
| Impact Test | 0°C or -20°C | -20°C (≥ 27J) | -20°C (≥ 34J) |
| Max Safe Thickness | ≤ 12mm | Up to 150mm | Up to 100mm+ |
| Best Application | Thin Facades / Aesthetics | Heavy Bridges / Welding | Cost-Saving / Fast Delivery |
Final Verdict: How to Buy Smart
- Rule 1: If your drawing requires heavy plates (e.g., 20mm, 30mm, or thicker), DO NOT buy S355J2WP. Your engineers must use S355J2W or Q355NH to prevent the welds from cracking.
- Rule 2: If you are building a beautiful, thin architectural facade and want the fastest, most vibrant rust color, S355J2WP is your top choice.
- Rule 3: If the European steel mills are giving you a 2-month lead time or the price is blowing your budget, switch to the Chinese Q355NHD. We can ship it within 7-10 days with full Mill Test Certificates (MTC) proving identical performance.
